Senneh, or Sanandaj, is Iran's centre of Kurdish culture. It is known, for example, for its rugs, which have been produced there for thousands of years. Iranian Kurdistan is also a part of the main areas of the Kurdish resistance movement, where the Kurds' guerrilla war has not calmed since the Islamic Revolution. As a counter measure, the government of Iran aims to merge the Kurds as part of Iran's majority culture. At the same time, it has restricted the construction of new roads, schools and hospitals in the area of Kurdistan, as well as interfered with the operations of local media.
